Chic Messy Top Knot Tutorial

You ever have those days where your hair keeps flicking you in the eye, getting caught in your necklaces and earrings, and you just wish you hair had ears so you could tell it to behave (and it would listen)?

These are top knot days.

And I have FOREVER been trying to find a style that suited me, because having a straight fringe/bangs, plus long and thick hair, most styles have fallen out after a few hours, or just not looked right. You'd think they'd be easy too, because they look so messy and simple and casual, but I have spent so many afternoons trying to make them look right and never managed it. UNTIL NOW.

And after lusting after chic top-knots like these...

theclosetclause
...I was adamant that I wanted to sport a top knot myself!

So, girls with long thick hair and bangs/fringes who have been waiting for the perfect top knot tutorial, THIS IS IT!

(Of course, this will work on anyone with medium-to-long hair too, I won't discriminate from any of you lusciously-locked ladies!)

This is the look you should end up with:

How cute is it! Plus it will last for ages without falling out - I did that Willow Smith 'Whip Your Hair Back and Forth' thing for a good few minutes, and my bun DID NOT BUDGE. Ahhhh, so perfect!

What you will need:

  1. A hairbrush for your hair type
  2. Teasing comb (optional)
  3. Bobby pins x4 (more if you have thicker hair)
  4. One hair tie (any colour, it will be hidden inside the bun)
  5. Hair spray
  6. Headband (optional, but will look super pretty!)

Taken By Surprise Tutorial: Chic Messy Top Knot

1. Start with at least day-old hair. If you have clean hair, spritz some dry shampoo/texturising spray on your roots and use fingers to muss up your hair so it has some grip.

I'm using:
Cedal Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

2. Brush your hair to remove any tangles, leaving you with soft, smooth hair.

3. Flip your hair over and using your hairbrush, brush your hair forward from the nape of your neck to your ends. Bring all the hair to the front, like a hair waterfall :)

4. Gather and brush your hair into a high ponytail that sits just in front of the crown of your head. This is important for girls with longer hair because if you make the ponytail at the crown, the weight of your hair will cause it to fall out eventually. And we don't want that!

5. Secure the ponytail with a strong hair tie. You should look like you're from the 1980s at this step haha For girls with bangs/fringes, use your fingers to pull your bangs/fringe to the front if they've been caught in your ponytail.

6. Loosen your ponytail by pulling the hair tie out about 3cm, then split your ponytail in two sections, and pull. This will stop the hair on your head looking flat, and give it a casual bounciness.

I look like a sad rabbit XD
7. With your hair brush (or a teasing comb), tease/back comb 5cm sections of your ponytail until your hair is super boofy and messy.

RARRR!
8. Grab the end of your teased ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie to create the bun.

9. Secure the ponytail to the hair tie using bobby pins to help it stay. TakenBySurpriseTip: Hairspray your bobby pins to give them some extra grip which will help them stay secure.

10. Arrange your bun until you're happy with the shape and size, then hairspray to finish!

Ta-da! All done!

This look takes less than five minutes to do, so it's perfect for work or school because it's what I like to call a "do-and-dash". But the great thing is, you can also dress it up with a braided headband like I did, some ribbon, or a barrette, and instant glam! Just add an LBD, some statement earrings and red lippy, and let gorgeousness ensue!

If you try this out, I'd love for you to send me a photo! Tweet me at @hi_JLY or leave a comment below if you have any top knot tips to share!
