An affordable liquid lipstick that you can get at the drugstore? Heck to the yes!
The latest lip release from Maybelline New York is the Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick collection, a range of eight high impact, punchy colours.
From nudes to bright pinks, there's a colour for everyone. Good luck not buying the whole set!
Read on to see swatches of each shade and a review of the application and formula...
Let's get a closer look at these beauties. The packaging on these is extremely sleek - Maybelline have definitely stepped up their game! With a matte black lid and clear tube, the Vivid Mattes easily look like premium products, and the formula inside really matches the quality of the casing. More on that later!
The applicator wand has a fluffy tip, which is perfect for getting the colour really smooth and even on the lips. I love that it's a bit bigger and more narrow than most liquid lipstick applicators, as it makes applying the product really easy, while still precisely. Perfect for liquid lipstick newbies!
The formula of these is super creamy and they go on like a dream - they're almost like mousse in texture! You'll need two coats to get full colour coverage on the lips, but once you're there, the end effect is all kinds of gorgeous.
Now let's take a look at each shade one by one. I think it's rad that the whole collection has such a range of different colours, like not all nude or all shades of pink!
Nude FlushLet's start with my FAVOURITE shade from the release! This is a peachy nude that I wear pretty much everyday - it's a great colour for work because it's neutral but still very classic. I recently lost my Mac Velvet Teddy lipstick (my lovely boyfriend has since surprised me with a brand new one, the hero!) and started using this instead, and it's almost an exact colour dupe! I'll have to post a comparison up on my Instagram sometime soon so you can see them together. It's pretty uncanny!
Nude ThrillNude Thrill is a really pretty dusty pink, which gets me a lot of compliments whenever I wear it at work. It's subdued enough that you can wear it with your usual, everyday makeup routine, but still gives you a subtle hit of colour that takes your look up a notch. If you're looking for a good liquid lipstick to start with, this shade is universally flattering and takes 0% effort to look good.
Possessed PlumStraight from the nudes and into the vamp! Possessed Plum is a dark purple shade in the tube, but on the skin, it looks more like a rich, red wine kind of colour. This particular shade needs a little more care when you're applying it (not uncommon for darker lipsticks) as it starts off a little streaky, but once you've applied a light second layer on top of the first, you're good to go.
Berry BoostThis raspberry shade is really punchy - it's a deep pink that's crazy pigmented and the strength of the colour payoff really does translate when this is applied to the lips. This particular shade is also gorgeous lightly applied to your lips using your fingertips, to create a soft pink stain that's a bit more wearable for most occasions.
Electric PinkTalk about electric!! This pink is ridiculously bright and is not for the fainthearted! But if you're game, this cool-toned, almost highlighter-like pink applies really beautifully and evenly, and thanks to the blue undertone of this colour, will even make your teeth look whiter. Bonus!
Fuchsia EcstasySimilar to Electric Pink, Fuchsia Ecstasy is also a bright pink, but with a warmer undertone. This watermelon kind of pink would be a great colour to wear during summer paired with a tan.
Rebel RedAnd of course, what would a lipstick collection be without a standout red! Rebel Red is a true scarlet shade that falls on the darker side of the spectrum. It's more of a vintage, pin-up kind of red so it'll suit pretty much every skin tone. This shade in particular also looks really sultry worn as a soft stain, for that 'just been making out' look without the mess. #cheeky
Orange ShotLast up is Orange Shot, a colour intense, dark orange. It could almost be classified as a red, and like Fuchsia Ecstasy, would look incredible worn with sun kissed skin in the summer time.
Here's the full range swatched (p.s. beauty bloggers, I have a blog post coming up soon on how to get your makeup swatches like this!). How GORGEOUS are they?! Like, I'll just get these tattooed on my arm now please....
Actually, that's pretty much what happens when you try to take these beauties off!! Another amazing thing is how long lasting the Vivid Mattes are; the photo below is after using micellar water makeup remover and um, this stuff is not going anywhere. It actually took three full days for the swatches to completely disappear! #somanyweirdlooksfrompeople
The full collection is out now in major supermarkets, selected pharmacies and variety stores for $17.95 each. These are perfect for beginners looking to try liquid lipsticks, or lip junkies like me who want a full set of colours at a more affordable price point.
